About the Domestic Box Office Rankings

Hollywood Rankings compiles annual domestic box office rankings to provide a consistent view of theatrical performance across different eras of film history. Each yearly list ranks films by their original domestic theatrical gross and applies the same release rules throughout the historical data.

Re-releases are excluded from the annual rankings. A film's initial theatrical run is treated as a single release as long as that run remains uninterrupted, while later theatrical returns are not added to the original ranking total. This approach is designed to make yearly box office results more directly comparable.

The historical archive is being expanded to include earlier decades, with particular attention given to years where complete and consistently structured annual box office rankings are difficult to find. Box office data is compiled and curated for use within the Hollywood Rankings database. More information about the underlying sources is available on the Data Sources page.
